The idea for North-by-South came out of an 8-year working relationship between open source engineers in San Francisco and São Paulo, Brazil. We realized that the "virtual office" we had created to work on free software projects was, in many ways, more efficient, more productive and more "real" than even some of the local jobs we were each working on. As the open source movement in Latin America continued to grow and companies in the SF Bay Area began seeking alternatives to expensive, in-house development staff, we realized that we had a unique opportunity. In 2006, we grabbed that opportunity and the rest is history!
